Friuli-Venezia Giulia is one of the five autonomous regions with special status in Italy. The other ones with the same status are Sardinia, Sicily, Trentino-Alto, Adige/Südtirol and Aosta Valley. The government of Italy acknowledges the power of this region in its legislation, economy and administration. The region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia is situated at the north-east corner of Italy and is bordered by Austria in the North and Slovenia in the East. It has Veneto to its west and touches the Adriatic Sea in the south. This region, as its name suggests, includes the historic region of Friuli and the region of Venezia Giulia geographically. Each of the two have their own unique features and identities which come together and create a region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The population of this region is 1.2 million people and the regional capital is Trieste.
