Basilicata – South of Italy

Basilicata is a small region of Italy and is situated in south of Italy. It is a mountainous region which is mostly dry or scarcely watered. It has two coastal areas which accompany the Ionian and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Basilicata is divided into two provinces as well — named Potenza and Matera, where Potenza also serves as the regional capital. With a population of roughly 600,000 people, Basilicata is made up of 47% of mountainous region and only 8% of plains, whereas 45% of it is hilly in its geographical aspect. The total area of Basilicata is 9,987 sq km

Apulia or Puglia

Apulia is a wonderful region in the south-eastern part of Italy. It is also referred to as the ‘heel of the boot’ because of its location on the map of Italy and is known as Puglia in Italian. It borders the Adriatic Sea in the east and the Ionian Sea to its southeast. With a population of about 4 million people, the capital town is Bari, and it is a flatland with lots of terraces and wide expanses but with low water tables. Other major cities are Brindisi, Lecce and Taranto. Apulia produces world renowned olive oil and about one-tenth of wine that is consumed in Europe. It produces about 17% of wine in the whole total of the country and competes with Sicily as the highest producer of grapes. Some of the most cherished wines are the Primitivo di Manduria and Salice Salentino, both reds!

Abruzzo, also known as Abruzzi is situated in central southern Italy and is a region that meets the Adriatic Sea in the east and has a distance of 50 miles from Rome in its west. Having a population of roughly 1.3 million people, Abruzzo is divided into four provinces namely Chieti, Teramo, Pescara and L’Aquila where L’Aquila also serves as its regional capital.
