The birthplace of Puccini is a lovely, unspoiled walled city that for many years enjoyed a position of power second only to Florence. It’s famous for its silks and olive oil and has become a favorite spot for artists and writers. A walk along the ramparts, 3 mi/4.8 km long and wide enough to have grassy lawns at the ramparts and an occasional park bench, should not be missed. In town, take a walk down the medieval streets, stopping at the 14th-century cathedral Duomo San Martino to see Nicola Pisano’s Descent From the Cross. And climb the quirky, tree-topped tower of Palazzo Guinigi for a bird’s-eye view of the elegant city below. Although you can see Lucca in half a day, you may want to linger to soak in its tranquil atmosphere and enjoy the many fine restaurants. Every August, Lucca hosts the famous Puccini Music Festival. 40 mi/65 km west of Florence.
